The dust has barely settled on Super Bowl LV, a championship game dominated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers inside their home stadium where they overcame the Kansas City Chiefs to earn their first NFL title since 2003. Tom Brady extended his legacy by winning his seventh Super Bowl and fifth MVP, both tops in league history.
After the game, Brady confirmed that he would be playing again in 2021, but that didn’t do enough for Las Vegas oddsmakers to make the Bucs the favorite heading into next season. Let’s take a look at who the oddsmakers have installed as the betting favorites to win next year’s Lombardi Trophy.
Kansas City Chiefs (11-2)
The losers of Sunday night’s big game have opened as the early favorites to win Super Bowl LVI. Kansas City failed to win back-to-back titles after defeating the San Francisco 49ers last year and would have become the first repeat champs since the 2003-04 New England Patriots.
Patrick Mahomes received the largest contract extension in league history before the season, so he isn’t going anywhere for a long time, and his top offensive weapons should all be back next year.
Green Bay Packers (9-1)
Aaron Rodgers captured his third NFL MVP award this season, throwing 48 touchdowns to just five interceptions. The 37-year-old guided the Packers to the top seed in the NFC and their second consecutive NFC Championship appearance.
His future in Green Bay became an immediate topic of conversation around the league, even from Rodgers himself, but rumors of his departure have been put to rest. These odds reflect his return, and the team’s biggest question now (at least on offense) will be the immediate future of free agent running back Aaron Jones.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11-1)
The newly-crowned champs open with the third-shortest odds to walk out of SoFi Stadium (home of Super Bowl LVI) as winners again, with Brady, Rob Gronkowski, and Bruce Arians all expected to return.
Filling out the rest of the roster could pose a challenge this offseason as there is an abundance of big names entering unrestricted free agency. That list includes Shaq Barrett, Lavonte David, Ndamukong Suh, Leonard Fournette, Antonio Brown, and Chris Godwin, though Arians exuded confidence that most would be back.
Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills (12-1)
Both teams have now reached the postseason in two straight years. Both will likely be giving large contract extensions to their young quarterbacks. And both have opened with identical odds to get over the hump and win Super Bowl LVI.
Josh Allen and the Bills stifled Lamar Jackson and the Ravens in the AFC Divisional Round during this postseason, before Buffalo would ultimately fall to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship.
