The first weekend of November was loaded with big games, and it didn’t disappoint. The primetime game was interrupted by the live speech from President-Elect Joe Biden, but when all was said and done No. 4 Notre Dame upset No 1. Clemson 47-40 in double overtime.
The Irish got out to a 10-0 lead and later led by as many as 13. Clemson stormed back to take a 33-26 lead with 3:30 to play. Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book found Avery Davis for his only touchdown pass of the game to tie the contest with 27 seconds left.
The teams traded touchdowns in overtime, with quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei scoring from one yard out for Clemson and running back Kyren Williams scoring from three yards out for the Irish. Williams scored his third touchdown of the game in the second overtime to give the Irish a 47-40 lead. Clemson’s final chance fell short after a pair of sacks as Uiagalelei’s pass on 4th and 24 was incomplete.
Overall, Williams ran for 140 yards while Book threw for 310 for Notre Dame. The Irish defense held Clemson running back Travis Etienne to 28 yards on 18 carries. Etienne had a rushing touchdown while Uiagalelei threw for 439 yards and two scores.
Clemson’s 36-game regular-season win streak ended as Heisman trophy candidate Trevor Lawrence was sidelined with COVID. Lawrence is expected back at quarterback after the bye when Clemson faces Florida State in two weeks.
Notre Dame takes control of the ACC at 7-0. The Irish will face Boston College next week and would have to lose at least two games to miss out on a trip to the ACC Championship Game. That December 19 tilt could be a rematch with Clemson.
Gators Take a Bite Out of Bulldogs
The No. 8 Florida Gators fell behind rival No. 5 Georgia 14-0 on Saturday but rallied for a 44-28 win. The win ends a three-game losing streak in the series for the Gators, and Florida would have to lose twice to not qualify for the SEC Championship Game.
Quarterback Kyle Trask threw for a career-high 474 yards, the second-highest single-game tally in Florida history. He also had four touchdown passes, and Florida’s defense had three interceptions in the win.
Florida faces Arkansas at home next weekend, and the Razorbacks are coming off an upset win over Tennessee on Saturday. Elsewhere in the SEC, No. 7 Texas A&M moved to 4-1 with a 48-3 win at South Carolina, and No. 2 Alabama (6-0) had the week off.
Ohio State Rolls On
No. 3 Ohio State (3-0) did as expected Saturday with a 49-27 win over Rutgers. Heisman favorite, quarterback Justin Fields, threw for 314 yards with five touchdowns in the win. The Buckeyes face Maryland next week after the Terps shocked Penn State 35-19 on Saturday.
No. 13 Indiana (3-0) beat No. 23 Michigan 38-21 on Saturday afternoon. The win was the first over Michigan for the Hoosiers since 1987. Northwestern (3-0) leads the Big Ten West after beating Nebraska 21-13, while the game between No. 10 Wisconsin (1-0) and Purdue (2-0) was canceled due to COVID.
Bearcats Stay Unbeaten
No. 6 Cincinnati stayed unbeaten at 6-0 with a 38-10 win over Houston on Saturday. The Bearcats and No. 9 BYU are the contenders to sneak into the College Football Playoff. Running backs Gerrid Doaks and Desmond Ridder combined for 287 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries.
